SecurityWeek Analysis: Over 210 Cybersecurity M&A Deals Announced in First Half of 2023
SecurityWeek published its cybersecurity M&A report for the first half of 2023, with Sweden showing a significant increase in deal activity.
BOSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#MA–SecurityWeek, a leading provider of cybersecurity news and information to global enterprises, today published its analysis of cybersecurity merger and acquisition (M&A) activity for the first half of 2023.
SecurityWeek’s cybersecurity M&A database added information on 234 deals announced in H1 2023, with a significant decrease observed in June.
A majority of the deals involved organizations in the United States, followed by the United Kingdom.
Sweden stood out in the first six months of 2023, and for the first time since SecurityWeek has been tracking M&A deals, the Scandinavian nation surpassed Canada and Germany in cybersecurity M&A activity.
Financial details were disclosed for 30 deals globally, for a total of $5.1 billion, significantly less than the $51.5 billion in disclosed deal value during the same period last year.
The biggest deals involved private equity firms, including Thoma Bravo buying Magnet Forensics for $1.3 billion, Francisco Partners acquiring Sumo Logic for $1.7 billion, and Crosspoint Capital Partners acquiring Absolute Software for $870 million.
Private equity firms were involved in 20 of the M&A deals from the first half of 2023, more than the yearly total for 2022 or 2021.
Deals involving companies that offer governance, risk management and compliance (GRC) services are roughly the same as in H1 2022, along with deals involving identity solutions providers.
Analysis showed a significant drop in acquisitions involving network security and data protection companies. These sectors were the second and fourth most common M&A categories in 2022 and have now dropped to the ninth and tenth positions.
The full report, which includes additional data and comparisons to 2022 and 2021, is available on SecurityWeek.com.
